Neat batteries
I just read this article that I picked up off of the Register. Seems toshiba has come up with a really impressive new technology for batteries that would let a consumer charge a Lithium-Ion battery to 80% in a minute and charge it to full capacity in a few minutes.
I'd love to see that coupled with the ambient light energy harnessing power of the Citzien Eco-drive watches to come up with a "charge as you go" ipod. That would be an invention that I could whole heartedly endorse as "the business".
JL!, how about you go talk to the Steve and Mr. Ives and get them started on that?

Sweet article on OS X development
This is a repost from /. but here it is. I'm guessing anyone that would normally read this already saw the link so I'll just write this off as a personal archive of the link. I don't like the searh funtionality over at slash.

Cool kids want to wear pants? Japan says "too bad"
Random article about people wanting to modernise sumo wrestling so that they can stop the decline in youth participation numbers. C'mon, it's sumo wrestling. Those guys probally aren't beating the ladies off with a stick in the first place, wearing a man diaper probally isn't doing any discernable harm.

I know what goes bump in the night
And it's a bat. Last night there were some escapades at my house. I was watching The Incredibles, which I highly recommend by the way, and something caught my attetion from the stairs to the basement. The door was open just a crack and I saw something moving so I went to inspect. Turns out it was a bat flying about. I yelled like a school girl and asked nick to come down quickly. He did but he saw no bat.
So we made sure all points of exit were closed and went about our normal business. Later I headed down to my room and when I was two steps into the basement he began to fly about again, causing me to dive up the steps, onto the kitchen floor. This produced a sharp pain in my knee that I hit on the way up and caused me to both yelp and laugh at myself because, logically, the bat is small. But it can fly which means it's not to be trusted.
Once I'd regained my composure and full use of my knee I went back down with a towel and a flashlight. I spotted my new nemisis on some shelves. I attempted to trap him with said towel but the junk he was resting on prevented this. He escaped and flew to the steps. I then threw the towel on top of him and he was stuck. I bundled him up in the towel and tossed the it into the back yard. A few minutes later I retrieved the towel to find he was still under it. I felt bad, knowing he would freeze, to which nick said "well stomp him then". This seemed more harse so I just said, "well buddy, good luck" and let nature run it's course.
So, final score: Bat 3, JoeBuck 1. He gets points for scaring me twice and hurting my knee. I get a point for ultimate triumph.

Picked this article up at the BBC. Interesting read about Sri Lanka's widowed fisherman.

Can you spare 2 tickets brother?
The title is from the cover of some movie, but that's besides the point. Here is said point. I would really like to go to see the killers at the Quest in May but the tickets sold out a month or so ago and I just found out about it. So if you happen to know anyone with 2 tickets, because what is a nerd without a lovely escort, that they would be willing to sell to me send them my way.

Listen to this interview
NPR interviewed the infamous Donald Knuth. Listen to it here. No seriously, stop what you're doing and listen to it. I thought it was great. The interviewer had a very appropriate amount of respect for the man and talked about what he's done. More importantly Knuth was able to share some of his philosphy and thoughts.
Knuth has written several books. Most notably those called "The art of computer programming" which are pretty close to sacred in the field from what I understand. He has an outstanding promise that if you are the first one to find a flaw he'll cut you a personal check for $2.56, which is a little bit of an inside computer nerd joke. I found out that he's spent over $20,000 this way over the 35 years since the first volume was published. This just did a second printing of volume one and over 90% of the pages where changed. I found that interesting.
I also dig his 3:16 book. So named because he does some exegesis on the sixteenth verse of the third chapter of every book of the bible. Dr. Turnquist brought it into class one day and I really dug it.

A little disturbing
Well, the guys at PA have linked to a very brief piece about a game coming out "holidy 2005". It's a sonic game, minus sonic. Apparently there's an evil hedgehog named Shadow that has a gun. A gun toting hedgehog.....what is this world coming to. Just let the poor hedgehogs run around and pick up gold rings and what not.
What's next, Dead of Alive Hedgehog Beach Volleyball? GTA: Hedgehog's of fury?
ps. PA houses converstaions and/or comics that may not be appropriate for the kiddies from time to time. Just tellin' ya.

Talk about having a bad day
I just read this article about an Italian reporter. She had been held hostage in Iraq for months, appearing in multiple tapes begging Italy to withdraw its troops from Iraq. Well, she was release today, to the surprise of officials. The pope, amongst many others, had been working for her release and where thrilled she was let go. Then, on the way to the airport, her car was fired on my American soldiers. One Italian officer was killed, the Iraqi driver was woulded and so was the former hostage. An investigation has been launched.
I know that war is tough and mistakes happen but guys....seriously. This is not what the US needed right now. Why couldn't it have been the canucks?

Anyone want a TV?
I picked up a new tv with part of my tax refund. I now have an old, crappy 19-ish inch tv with only a coax in. If someone wants it, it's yours.
brooke, Travis and I went and saw constantine. It was decent, better than Hellboy. Kruck has the right idea on this one, it's a renter.
Not a ton going on. Work is work. Learning new things is fun.
Learning new ways in which to realize your behind is not fun. Sounds like the parents might be getting a new dog soon so that's sweet. I think it's my turn to have some say in what they get but not so sure that'll happen. brooke is gearing up to go home for spring break so that's fun for her.
Went to Duluth last weekend to see brooke's friend emily. Met emily's fiancee which was cool. He owns the bridgeman's up there so we stopped in and I had a licorice malt( I mention this point because I know my mom will be jelous).
Travis is subbing now so that's also of note. Kinda crazy to think that some student out there is asking Mr. Munson for a bathroom pass. Go figure.
Anywho, keep on a rockin' for the kids.
