This gives me the creeps
I'm not sure why at the moment but this creeps me out. All credit for the link goes to Paul Boyum. I tend to react poorly to the obvious commercialization of faith especially when it purports to be "faith" or "consious" driven. If swapping out your ipod shuffle lanyard is the only way you can express your views on morality, eternity and the like...the wow.....thats....wow......
UPDATE: Paul points out this is very possibly a joke. If so I apologize for knee-jerk reaction. I'm gonna leave this up as a reminder that the 4th cup of coffee at 4pm isn't a good idea :/

Minister finds handling electronics while standing in water a bad idea
So, a minister electrocuted himself when he began fiddling with a mic while standing in a baptismal pool. I know this must be a huge loss to his family and the members of his church but at some point why didn't someone mention that electronics and water are a bad combination?

Humans get olympic medals, rats get penguin meat
So, read this at the bbc. It's not terribly interesting, they basically slapped a bunch of radio tagged rats down on an unihabited island to see how they traveled and behaved. After a while they wanted to catch them. One rat was pretty much uncatchable, after a while it turned up in a trap on another island. They think it set a record for swimming 400m in the open ocean. Congrats rat, you just rewrote the limits on what your entire specis is capable of. Oh look, some penguin meat...OH CRAP YOU'RE DEAD. Seems like a rough shake, setting a record to die in a trap. Meh, such is life.

Another of my top 5 things on the internet
Kenny Roger's Jackass parody from the people at MAD TV. I'm not a big MAD tv fan at all but this is freaking hillarious. I forget if I've posted this before or just forced most of you to watch it on my powerbook. I'm not sure where I first saw this but I *think* it was from Phil McDonnell. Not sure.

I annoy myself sometimes...
So, at the end of last week I saw a buddy of mine at work, Wil, eating a pair of hot pockets for lunch. I thought this was a good idea, hot pockets for lunch. I bought a few boxes this weekend and I brought my first box to work today. The problem is that everytime I think about them I think of a line from one of the Austin Power movies where doctor evil says "does scotty want a hot pocket" but hot pocket is pronounced "hawt pock-it". So I've got that going off in my head fairly often and it's starting to get old.
Freaking hawt pock-its.

Holy stink this guy is a tool
Go back and read the second link I posted in my last little blurb. Jack Thompson faxed the Seattle cops to sick them on the PA guys because they were orchastrating a mass harassment of him. In the mail he puts himself forward as the defender of all cops because violent video games are really cop murder simulators. It's really a rather far fetched letter, I definately suggest you read it. I love that is must be "mass harassment" and it couldn't be the fact that he pecked a fight with a whole industry, and one website in particular, with several hunder thousand vocal and technically literate followers. That's like walking into church on Sunday and saying "potlucks suck". You're going to get a quick and heated response ;)
My personal favorite part of his letter is that he gave the wrong web address for the Penny Arcade website. The PA guys are a http://www.penny-arcade.com/ and he linked in http://www.pennyarcade.com/ which is a link to a transgender theatre troup from NY, yeahyeah I mistyped it more than once but feel free to make the "how do you know that" joke if you want, and that website is currently offline. I would dare guess that the volume of traffic generated by this silly letter and it's quick dissemination through the interweb reduced their servers to a smoking pile of celeron goo.
I'm getting a kick out of all the backlash this guy is getting but he has got to be realizing he definately underestimated the voracity of the video game community when he started making his ridiculous statements. As the saying goes, "mess with the bull, you're gonna get the horns".
Another reason to checkout the link in the previous post is that they put up a picture of the 10k check they wrote. One of their buddies is flying down to San Fran to attend a charity event that is being put on by the group Penny Arcade is giving the money to. Their buddy going to deliver it in person. Again, yeah for Tycho and Gabe for taking a raving lawyer's rants and turning it into something good that will help kids out.

Viva la video game nerds
Well, the ever laughable Jack Thompson backed down when video game modders offered to develop his ridiculous game title. He said his suggestion was "satire" and, as many have pointed out, this would leave us to believe that he also means that his previously expressed intent to donate to charity was also satire. Not so funny to say, "I'm giving money to help orphans and crippled puppies and the like....OH JUST KIDDING".
Well, the guys at PA have stepped up and donated the 10k in Jack's name. I think that's really cool of them and should give big Jacky something to think about...if he has "thinking time" scheduled....which is semi-doubtful given his recent lashings out at the actual well-formed agruements the video game community has responded with. <-- Holy run on sentance batman

Cool apple article by time canada
Link here. Nelson sent me the link and I read it and liked it. Nothing ground braking, just a rather frank series of observations. I also learned that the head developer's name for iTunes is Jeff. The Steve would not allow his last name to be printed. That's funny to me.

Oldie but a goodie
For those of you that doubted the sweetness of ninja's, doubt no more. This is old hat for most of the Bethel crew but it's still pretty sweet in it's own right.
sidenote: I own this shirt. One may ask why I don't wear it. That answer would be the combination of "chalupa's taste too good not to eat" and "my roommates spilled something that was reddish/purpleish on it a few years ago but I still keep it for memory's sake". I wore it to new TA training a few years back and got a few odd looks but on the whole I called it a rousing success because it definatively established my place as a credible authority figure to the new workers.

This years title of "crazypants McGee" goes to Jack Thompson
So there is this attention starved lawyer in Florida named Jack Thompson. Jack is apparently anti violent video games.
He wrote an open letter to the video gaming community saying he'd donate $10k to Take Two Interative's president, and his apparent nemsis, charity of choice if someone in the industry would create a video game based on his "idea". He suggests the video game industry makes a video game chronicalling the adventures of a parent that lost a child to a video game inspired killer. This parent trapses his way across the US laying death and carnage at the doorstep of not only video game creators, but arcade patrons and electronics superstore employees.
I highly doubt the pimple faced 16 year old at Best Buy saving up to buy that phat coffee can muffler for his '93 civic is really a scheming child hater bent on world de-moralization Jack.
Even more ironic is that in the game, the first step is to slay the head of Take This Interactive and her family. This clear allusion to the President of Take Two, whose studio put out the Grand Theft series and Manhunt among other violent titles, is pretty freaking dark. Jack is against violent video games but wants a video game made that depicts the slaughter of the people he disagrees with and their families. Awesome dude, awesome.
I know this is all a cycnical and meant to make the video game industry look like a bunch of liars and hypocrites but in the end he ends up looking like a crazy in my book.

Some days I'm surprised I haven't been eaten by a bear
So, I'm not always the most observant guy. Granted, I can watch the only episode I've ever seen of the O.C. and realize that the waiter in one scene was the sleezy guy selling a video tape in the scene we saw 15 minutes ago but at the same time I can't cook a pork chop apparently. I've also managed to botch scrambled eggs and even macaroni and cheese ( that word "drain" is pretty key evidently).
Well, in yet another act of forgetfulness I almost missed the Mike Doughty show tonight. I picked up tickets two weeks ago and propmtly forgot when it was. While looking for a cd to listen to I ran across his new cd, Haughty Melodic (iTunes link), which I really dig by the way, and remmbered I had 2 tickets to the show in my glove box and it was tonight. I'll let you know what I think after the fact but I am rather excited to say the least.
I also just realized that I could have simply posted "I'm bad at cooking and am going to the Mike Doughty show tonight" and saved you all a lot of reading. Sorry about that.
I'm also still sick.

I like coincidence's
I wonder if this could be at all related to this. I'm sure others have already spun up the tinfoil hat machines but it's interesting that Microsoft would agree to a settlement that included a large cash payout and, even more valuable, the integration of a seperate companies music store into it's seaching and instant messaging empires less than a week after they backed out of their promises to deliver their own music store, citing cost as being prohibitively high. I have to wonder if one day someone didn't just walk into Billy's office and say "hey, um......we could kill 2 birds with one stone here". That's probably not how it happened but that's the way it plays out in my mind.
And that guy's name was Ted, in case anyone was wondering.

A funny story about a W qoute
bbc link. Apparently a Palestinian(sp?) authority figure is qouted in an upcoming BBC documentary as having stated that the W said something like "God told me to track down the terrorists in Afghanistan and I did, then he said George, go liberate Iraq, and I did. Now he's saying go get the Palestinians their own state and Israel their security and by God I will".
Is anyone else concerned that he's using his "success" in Afghanistan and Iraq as proof of his ability to divine and then enact the will of the almighty?

Go go link bot. Short version of the link, giant python tries to eat a live alligator, gets it half way in and it bursts. Reminds me of this cartoon that I've seen a few times in random places.
