A solid new show to check out
It's call The Amazing Screw on Head. Here's a link to the pilot (flash required) on sci-fi. The first 30 seconds has a werewolf and a tommy gun toting monkey so you know it's good stuff.

Chalk one more up for the nerds
So, there was a link to an ars blog about binary stars exploding and what not. The thing in the article was the image of the one star flying out from the other and under it the byline "artists impression". That made me laugh because it's their impression of what a scientist told them to draw?
What was the creative process?
artist: "So there's like space...and one big star and a smaller star and the little star is like flying away but in a little bit of an arc and leaving a trail"
scientist: "so it's like the opening to star trek: deep space nine but you replaced the station and the USS defiant with stars?"
artist: "...you friggin nerd"

Reasons why I love the internets
Because you can find stuff like the great Jon Stewart spot on net neutrality, complete with crazy, aging senator that has a grasp on the internet that I'll go ahead and equate to a monkey's ability to visualize cold fusion.
Also, via some stumbling I did through wikipedia, that thing is addicting, I found a little video entitled ultimate showdown and it definitely lives up to its moniker.
Another fun thing I found on wikipedia is that there is apparently a forty foot tall optimus prime statue(2nd to last bullet point) somewhere in China whose origins are not exactly clear. That is awesome.

This one is for sanders
I ran into a friend of mine, Matt Sanders, at a gathering last night. It was good to see Matt, it's been a while since I'd run into him. He mentioned that he reads this, which ups my mental count to 3 people that read it, and that I hadn't written in quite some time.
This post is so Matt has something to read on Monday.
Also, I met Evan Buerke, who is a friend of several of my friends and acquintences. It was very nice to meet you Evan.
I just finished reading "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay". I think it's a phenomenal book. Travis has read a bit of it but was waiting for me to finish so he could take it with him in his traipsings about and tear through it with a speed that I find myself a bit jelous of at times. He and I were talking about the author's writing and how he did a great job of varying the tempo of the plot, the varying degree of detail provided and how that all ebbed a flowed in a seemingly perfect rythm that added to the excellent narrative.
This is a rather lengthy book ( 650+ pages ) but it really does go much faster than you'd think. Great character development, I loved that it made reference to real things ( WWII, Stan Lee, Salvador Dali, etc ) and really seemed to encapsulate the time in which the character's lived.
As I mentioned, Travis is working through it currently but I'm sure it will be available for lending at some point in the near future. There are used copies on Amazon for a few bucks or it should be found for < $10 I would think at local store. Go get it if you're in the market for a great book.
Also, I went back to Isle, MN to my home town for the annual summer parade. It was good to see a fair chunk of the people I went to school with. It's weird for me to have "old friends" like that. To say things that I always considered exclusive to the conversations of my parents like "I haven't seen you since < insert a year from the last decade>, how are you doing?" or "so, how many kids do you have now?". This getting old business is a bit disarming, I recommend you avoid it if at all possible.
