But, I have something that is more "blog appropriate" and I'd like your input.
I'm working on an idea for my first tattoo. I'm going to get an abridged family tree, but in hex. So here's the text version:
Ervin Doris
Brad Bonnie
Steve Dawn
Melissa

and in hex:
45 72 76 69 6E 20
44 6F 72 69 73 0A
42 72 61 64 20 42
6F 6E 6E 69 65 0A
53 74 65 76 65 20
44 61 77 6E 0A 4D
65 6C 69 73 73 61
0A

The question is, what font do I go with? I'm thinking something "terminal"-ish.
Discuss.

So, the end of March and April came and went. In there I had Mooney stop by for a few days which was a lot of fun. I played in my first Magic: The Gathering tournament and took second of 12 people. The new quarter started and is now 1/2 over. In general things are carrying on as normal here in CA. The weather has been fairly good with a week or two of cold & rain.

I saw Mike Doughty this past week at a tiny venue and loved it. Here's a track off his live cd, it's "White Lexus" tumblr link. Easily one of my favorite songs of his and he played it that night, which was appreciated. He also had a question jar where people in the crowd could write down questions and he'd answer them throughout the show. Some favorites of mine were:
Q: If I eat you will I gain your powers?
A: Yes but I would ask that you kindly refrain from eating me

Q: GI Joe taught us that knowing is 1/2 the battle. What is the other 1/2?
A: Being groovy. Knowing and being groovy is 100% of the battle

Q: How did you become so awesome?
A: There was once this dude that was awesome and I ate him

School wise I've been doing a lot of reading on security which has been fun. I'm doing a class project involving steganalysis and I'm digging that. Not where my career is going but fun to learn about and lay down some code for. I've also been playing with VMware and learning a lot more about compiling things into the linux kernel and all the fun that comes with that.

In closing, Happy Mothers day to all the Mothers out there. Thanks for all that you do, much of which goes unseen and unrecognized.

It's finals week here. Well, really next week but all my stuff is due Tuesday so this is crunch time for me.

Turns out I stress too much. Makes sense, my Mom stresses too much and so does my sister. Figures I would as well. The up side is both my profs here have told me to chill out and that everything is okay. I actually had one of them tell me not to worry about my grades and that I'm actually better off for having attempted an ambitious class project and come up short than to have done an easy project. That was great to hear.

Onto other news, I know where I'll be this summer (for those of you wondering) and the answer is CA. I was offered, and have accepted, a position as a summer intern at Google. I'm thrilled to have this opportunity, especially when most companies are massively reducing or eliminating their summer intern positions. I am disappointed that I won't be back in MN with the fine folks I've come to know and love there but if I have to stay in CA, this is the best way to do it.

I should be getting my bike back soon so I plan on doing a copious amount of riding during the week and a half break I have coming up. That'll be a lot of fun.

Guess that's it. In closing, here are two songs I've been digging on something fierce lately. The Weakerthan's Sun in an Empty Room and Frightened Rabbit's The Twist (tumblr link, kinda loud so turn speakers down)

Also on the "not quite fully awesome" front, someone saw fit to kick my bike over in the middle of the night. I called the insurance guys, they came and got it and I just heard back that there was $2300 in damage. My $150 deductible is looking pretty great right now.
Past that its more of the same. Great weather, well some rain now and then, attempts at cooking, I totally over did my venison this week and it came out pretty dry, and school.
I'll try and wrestle a mountain lion or something for next time so I have something more interesting to recount.

First off, my trip home for Xmas was a blast. My friends and family are great and seeing them was priceless. There were also several trips to barley john's which makes me happy.
School's on full-speed right now. I'm in a "sleep 3 hours, work for 12, sleep for 3" cycle. Trying to get a paper done to submit it for a workshop (I'll get a link up when it's done). For the record, writing a paper in a little more than a week is not something I recommend :/
Not much else is new. The weather in CA is still brilliant, even if it is a bit rainy now and then. I'm still in the market for an internship so if anyone wants to see a lot more of JoeBuck this upcoming summer, let me know.
Oh, I'm super excited about The Watchman movie and I have Band of Horses tickets for April.

So, it's November. I forget that sometimes as it still feels like September here (which is amazing). I went for a run today, it was in the low 60's I think? Too much fog to see the ocean from campus but I'll see it tomorrow. Those last few sentences are pretty great in my book.
I have my ticket booked to go home for xmas. I'll be in MN from the 18th to the 2nd. It's looking like I'll be in the market for a New Year's party so let me know if you've got an invite to spare to one. This is a bit of a bummer given the last two New Year's where I helped throw pretty excellent parties (if I am to congratulate myself). It'll definitely be less work and cheaper this year though, so that's something.
There are two weeks left (although this is a short week) and then finals here. That means panic is starting to set in as people take stock of what is to be done before the quarter is up. I'm not in too bad of a shape, which is nice. I'm going to chalk that up to working really hard the whole way through. When you can't get the answer, brute force it right? ;)
I went to the Cal / Stanford football game yesterday and then rolled around Berkeley with another grad student and his buddies from his UC - Santa Barbara days. That was a blast. Berkeley's a cool area, gonna have to find excuses to get up there more often.
That's about it for now. Nothing earth shattering going on, just keeping on with the grad school thing.
Oh, and I thought the new Bond was "meh" but you probably already read that on my twitter if you read this.

If you're not down with the Obama (the beastie boys are ardent Obama supporters) you still owe it to yourself to go see this show and just go to your happy place for the few minutes that they talk about their views.
Tickets go on sale next Friday at 10am CST (link)

The guys over at pandas have some thoughts on a recent interview with Sarah Palin and a link to the interview (here) that I think are worth reading.
Something that I hadn't paused to consider is that there is statistically a reasonable chance that McCain would not survive his entire 4 year term, if elected. This brings to the forefront the question of if Sarah Palin would be a decent president. The lack of experience at the national & international scope is concerning as well as her insistence that she is equipped, inexperience aside, because she's ready and won't blink. That sounds like a "shoot from the hip" mentality that we've had for the last 8 years. Not terribly excited about that...
I find the logic that she has international experience because Alaska is near Russia as absurd and laughable. When is the last time Alaska and Russia had direct political, economic or military interaction of any sort?
I still need to do more research but that point seems absolutely ridiculous.
