Wow....that's sad

So, two things these week lead me to think "wow, that's just sad".
The first was a radio ad. It started out with "that's not fair..." and the gist of it was that since other people had laptops then you should. Because that's fair. If someone else has one, you deserve one.
I'm not saying the current system is perfect but this concept seems absolutely ludicrous. Also it's obviously an attempt for a few to play on the insecurities/desires/financial inexperience of many others. Sad...
The second was an ad staring Gary Coleman. It was for a service with a website at cash call (one word) dot com. The advertise up to $2,600 with no collateral. The fine print that flashed up at the end shows that the loan is at 99.25% interest. I'm amazed that a rate that high is even remotely legal. How ridiculous is that? Again, a few preying on the unsuspecting. Sad, again...

That's all....just bummed me out and I figured I'd blog a bit.

New news

So, been a while since I posted and even longer since it was something about me and not a link.

Well, the news du jour is that I'm moving to CA. I've been accepted into a Ph D program at UCSC. I'm specifically going out to study storage systems. I'm really excited about it. It's a great opportunity and a new part of the country to check out. It should be fun. The program runs for 4 - 7 years so that means if you're in the south bay area you most likely have a couch to crash on.

My family is doing a road trip out there with my stuff. We're going to visit the grand canyon and they're planning on going through Yellowstone and to Mount Rushmore on their way back. If anyone has any tips or suggestions for this little road trip please pass them my way.

My last day at work is August 21st and we're heading out (tentatively) August 31st. I'm having a going away shin dig on August 16th (invite here). Everyone's welcome, let me know if you're coming so we can adjust food ratios correctly.

Dr. Horrible, get it while it's hot

I threw some messages up on twitter but I figured I'd post it here as well. There's a series by Joss Whedon called Dr. Horrible's Sing-along-blog which will be up until Sunday, July 20th. Check it out if you haven't, all three episodes are up now. It's good stuff.

Of twitter and vegas

So, my posting has been...erratic as of ~~late~~ always.
I've actually been writing more frequently but I'm doing most of it on twitter. I'd say check it out if you haven't and look me up, my handle is jbuck (clever eh?)

I was out in vegas this week for work. I had a ton of fun, had some huge hands at hold'em (a straight flush to the queen, how cool is that?) but ultimately came out down a bit (but well within my allotted "entertainment" budget I gave myself). I have a few stories, look me up and I'll share them. The best relates to some travel hijinks that I'm not sure if they were my fault or not (I'm looking at you AmEx travel system).

Today was a great dad's day with my father and his side of our family. Ate lunch with some of them and my grandfather. He's an amazing guy and I have a huge amount of respect for him and the life he's lived.

I rode my bike there and back, caught a little rain and then went to home depot to buy some plants. I am in charge of living things for the first time since my dog died when I was in the sixth grade (it wasn't my fault, I swear). Here's hoping :/

Fun thought of the day

So, I'm stuck at a Carribou in Maplewood. I've been here since 8:30 am while my car gets worked on. At present the ETA is $350 and 4 hours on a lift. This is after my $230 car wash yesterday (oh, and they thew in a free remote door opener).

The one fun thing is that after they started working on problem 1 of 3 they found a fourth issue. Turns out something that has the word "bellows" in it has a tear and that's apparently not a good thing. So they're fixing that.

This latest news put a fun thought in my mind. Since there's a bellows of some variety in my car I've decided that the guys from fraggle rock are real, they live in my car, and they have progressed into their own little iron age. Good luck little builders and avoid the dark ages if you can. No one wins when knowledge is considered bad and dogma's rule supreme.

UPDATE: I just read the whole wikipedia article for fraggle rock and saw that a movie is in the works with Frank Zappa's son doing the script. It's live action and should ship sometime in '09. Neat :)

Do it for the kids...or the lack thereof

Ars had an article about a condom manufacturer doing research into condom failures and trying to reduce failure rates. Without getting into a religious/philosophical debate, I'm willing to state that I think more reliable condoms would be a "good thing" in general, so nice work team.

That being said, the funny part is the picture in the article. The issue was that the company wasn't having luck reproducing failures in the lab and apparently failed products that customers sent in (really?) weren't shedding a lot of light into how they broke. So, someone built a machine to better simulate the failure environment.

Somewhere a mechanical engineer had this happen after a day at work:

(engineer's wife) what did you do today at work honey?

(engineer) I built an anatomically correct machine that simulates sex.

(wife, now with a disapproving stare) ....

(engineer, semi-pleadingly as he remembers how uncomfortable his couch is) It was for science I swear!

(engineer, under his breath) ...this time....

Fun videos for the day

So, two videos made me do my little man giggle today:
Firstly, F*#k the earth day (mom, don't watch this. There are swears)
Secondly, Digg office dance party which is fun. Not terribly original but fun enough and there are a few shots that made me laugh, like the guy being pulled around on a cart that's just out of the shot but you see the person pulling him a few times.

Another cool sony ad

This time they flooded a few block of miami with foam and gave the residents cameras and video cameras to film it from inside the mess.
Seems like a cool idea and the videos look neat. Well done sony.
